Who Are We?

WPerformance Training is a volleyball specific sports performance training company based in Maryland. We believe in empowering athletes to achieve their fullest potential as student athletes. Founded by volleyball player, performance and strength coach Richard Tan, our programs are built on the principles of personalized and science-backed training from Track and Field and Olympic Weightlifting. With a focus on technical skill, physical conditioning, and mental resilience, we provide a holistic approach to athlete development. Join us on our mission to elevate the game of volleyball.

Here at WPerformance Training, we are determined to help athletes learn more-so than anything. Utilizing sports science and training principles, we aim to create athletes that are more than just athletes. Ones that excel, while also learning and understanding the how and the why, allowing for personal growth and applications to life past the sport of volleyball. 

Meet The Team

Richard W. Tan - Founder

Richard Tan, founder of WPerformance Training, started his volleyball journey junior year of high school. As an unathletic and late starter, this eventually became a blessing in disguise. By breaking down and learning each aspect of the game himself, this experience laid the foundation for his personalized training methods and allowed for a deeper understanding of volleyball. 

 

Despite initial struggles with coordination and strength, Richard's commitment to research and training led to a big transformation in his athletic capabilities. Through dedicated effort, he increased his vertical jump by over 10 inches, significantly improved his speed, and enhanced his overall athletic performance. This personal journey of development underpins Richard’s coaching philosophy and his dedication to helping athletes achieve their goals while staying healthy.

Richard has five years of coaching experience in both girls and boys. He helped lead the 2024 University of Maryland’s club team to its first Top 16 appearance at NCVF since 2016 as player-coach. His experience extends to various forms of volleyball, including beach, grass, and 9-man, a Chinese-American variation of the sport. He is currently pursuing a CSCS certification under the National Strength and Conditioning Association. â€‹â€‹
